The MDC provides both one and two semester placements focusing on supervised training in direct school mental health services for students from a variety of academic majors:
- Mental Health Counseling
- Art Therapy
- Child/Family Science
- Social Work
Primary work is conducted in surrounding counties with at-risk clients, from the kindergarten level through high school. Students are assigned clients for both individual and group treatment, attend weekly group supervision, and are responsible for all professional record-keeping required as counselors.
Students are exposed to art, animal-assisted and play therapies as well as more traditional counseling modalities. Students are urged to take advantage of occasional opportunities to give professional presentations to students/staff/parents. Weekly research readings on pertinent topics are suggested to students.
Mileage for travel to school districts is reimbursed, carpooling and full-day availability is required. Fees for Level II Background Check and fingerprinting are paid by the MDC.
